This week, I introduced an Assembly
resolution designating April 2008 as Organ and Tissue
Donor Awareness Month throughout the state of New
York. In doing so, I am hopeful that more people
will become aware of the real and urgent need for
organ and tissue donors.
As a two-time kidney transplant recipient, I am
a living example of how organ and tissue donations
can help save a life. Donated organs help improve
the quality of life for many recipients, giving
individuals facing terminal illness the opportunity
to live long, healthy lives.
New Yorkers who would like to become a donor can
either sign up online on the New York State Organ
and Tissue Donor Registry at:
http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/donor/index.htm
or through the Department of Motor Vehicles when
you apply for or renew your license or non-driver
ID.
It is my hope that by making April Organ and Tissue
Donor Awareness Month, we can get more people to
join the Donate Life Organ and Tissue Donor Registry
and help spread the word about the needs of organ
recipients.
